Victoria’s vibrant and innovative small businesses play a crucial role in keeping our economy strong and the Andrews Labor Government is working harder than ever to help them succeed.
One of the great privileges of my job is that I get to meet so many small businesses and see first-hand how hard they work and how important they are to their local communities.
This government deeply values the contribution small businesses make to our economy and our society. Victoria has more than 556,000 small businesses which deliver nearly half of the state’s private sector jobs and contribute a third of the state’s output in goods and services.
That is why we are getting on with the job of lowering taxes, cutting red tape, creating the right conditions for growth and making sure small businesses get a fair go. We have brought forward payroll tax cuts, strengthened the Victorian Small Business Commissioner’s remit to resolve disputes and introduced a Fair Payment Code to address the issue
of late payments.
Small Business Festival Victoria is a celebration of this great sector and a great chance to share new ideas and skills and make sure small business owners and entrepreneurs have the resources they need to be successful.
This year’s festival is bigger and better than ever with more than 500 events spread across regional Victoria and metro-Melbourne covering topics ranging from business planning to marketing, to social media, networking and financial management.
A real focus of this year’s festival will be how emerging technologies are affecting small businesses and how we can harness them to improve productivity and open up new opportunities. Another new initiative is a week-long celebration of the fantastic contribution women in business make to the sector.
One of the great strengths of Victoria is that we are an open, globally connected and diverse society. This year’s festival will celebrate the rich diversity of Victoria’s multicultural business community and there will be sessions on how we can tap into international networks
to track business trends and access new markets.
Nearly 30,000 people attend the festival each year and it is a great chance for small businesses to network, to learn about the range of government services available year-round and to hear inspiring stories from successful business leaders.
Whether you are running a small business or thinking about starting one, I encourage you to get involved in this year’s festival and look forward to meeting many of you there.
The Hon. Philip Dalidakis, MP
Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade
